Distribution of Sensory and Autonomic Neuropetides in nasal Mucosa of the Hamsters

Abstract
Nasal mucosa is richly supplied with sensory and autonomic nervefibers. Recent immunohistochemical studies have revealed nerve fiber containing substance P, calcitonin gene related peptides, neuropeptide Y, vasoactive intestinal polypeptide. It
seems,
therefore important to understand the functional significance of neuropeptides. First of al, we investigated the distribution of neuropeptides in nasal mucosa of the hamster using indirect immunohistochemistry (ABC method). Substance P and CGRP
reactive
fibers were seen beneath and within the nasal epithelium. NPY reactive fibers were seen around the blood vessels and glands, and VIP reactive fibers were seen around the blood vesseles.
